the magical paths book club
brielle here :) i am an 18-year veteran English teacher with an unbelievable passion for reading. as a homeschooling mom, i focus on filling my kids’ world with literature, as i know books can satiate nearly every kernel of curiosity and that, once someone finds the right book/style/author/genre, the most magnificent relationships with reading and learning usually follow. the online book clubs i run are for all kids 7 to 18 years old who have an interest in reading—whether you’re just getting started with chapter books, or you max out your library card every other week. whether you love scientific journals or mystery series. whether you read for 15 minutes a day or for 3 hours a day. wherever you’re at, you’re welcome here. all i ask of my members is that they come prepared to our reading circles, ready to chat about the myriad interpretations of, reactions to, and opinions about the works we read. please click the buttons to the left to either sign up for the current book club OR to suggest a new one.
every book club will meet once per month for one hour via Google Meet
participation in book club is free. if, after several meetings, you feel so inclined to make a donation for my contributions to book club, you may do so via PayPal to b.veselsky@gmail.com. all proceeds will be donated to Hearts & Bones Animal Rescue, a non-profit dog rescue in NYC where I was previously the Lead Volunteer Adoptions Coordinator.
all book clubs are a collaborative effort run with community energy in mind. while i will encourage all members to engage in thoughtful discussion, to find their voices and speak their truths, i will model & emphasize respect above all. we must all participate with a shared spirit of friendliness and curiosity, while recognizing that all of our viewpoints and opinions are welcome and valid.
a bit about me:
i’m obsessed with medieval Arthurian legend (pretty amazing for me that i LIVE in a medieval town!) but besides that, i mostly read modern fiction. i also love short stories.
if i had to pick one, my favorite work ever is easily Susan Sontag’s The Letter Scene, a short story about letter writing, a practice that i absolutely cherish.
a few other favorites: The Mists of Avalon, The Once and Future King, Le Morte d’Arthur, The Poisonwood Bible, Bring Up the Bodies, The Tempest, 1984, Waiting, The Illustrated Man, The Goldfinch, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Tell the Wolves I’m Home, Pachinko, Fahrenheit 451, The Dutch House, Things Fall Apart…. so many!
